Transition Program

The Challenge

The Transition Program was split between two facilities, limiting cohesion and consistency for students with diverse physical and cognitive needs. As such, traditional assumptions about space, safety, and instructional models were not easily transferable. The district needed a way to rethink what was possible within these constraints and to explore how their program could evolve beyond its current limitations, all within the constraints of an existing church facility.

The Solution

We led a tailored educational visioning process that clarified roles, elevated student needs through representative voices, and created space to question assumptions about safety, independence, and hands-on learning. In‑person and virtual tours expanded the team’s perspective, helping them imagine possibilities beyond current constraints and consider a shift toward project‑based learning as a way to broaden educational offerings.

The Benefit

The resulting vision centered on dignity, student agency, and real‑world readiness, and it translated directly into design strategies that thoughtfully adapted the church facility to support the program’s unique needs. By intentionally departing from standard district models, the design created flexibility, cohesion, and a more authentic learning environment aligned with the program’s long‑term goals.
